Deathtrap
Whether you’re laughing or terrified, Deathtrap will leave you gasping. This Tony Award-nominated play by Ira Levin holds the Broadway record as the longest running comedy thriller, with an estimated 1,800 performances over four years.
This play-within-a-play twists and turns with whodunit intrigue while providing enough comedy to keep the macabre at bay. Reserve your seat for an evening of mystery sure to stimulate your intellect as well as your funny bone.
As the play begins, playwright Sidney Bruhl has a hard time breaking through his writer’s block when one of his students arrives at his doorstep with a play Sidney suspects is a hit. Desperate for success, Sidney contemplates murder so he can reap the rewards inherent in the fresh script.
Does he or doesn’t he? That’s a question best answered onstage.
Deathtrap opened on February 26, 1978, at the Music Box Theatre to mixed reviews. Over its long run, its Broadway cast has featured John Wood, Marian Seldes, Victor Garber, Marian Winters, Richard Woods, Stacy Keach, Farley Granger, John Cullum and Robert Reed. The play received a 1978 Tony Award for Best Play.
Tony Award nominee Marian Seldes, who created the role of Sidney’s wife Myra, holds a Guinness world record for appearing in 1,793 performances during its initial Broadway run.
A London revival featured Estelle Parsons, Jonathan Groff, Claire Skinner and Simon Russell Beale. A movie version starred Christopher Reeve, Dyan Cannon and Michael Caine. Deathtrap closed on June 13, 1982, after moving to the Biltmore Theatre.
Playwright Ira Levin’s body of work includes novels A Kiss Before Dying, Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives and The Boys from Brazil—all of which made it to Hollywood as film versions. His stage works include No Time for Sergeants, Critic’s Choice and the book and lyrics for the musical Drat! The Cat!.
