David Mitchell's background
Mitchell was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire in England. Even as a young boy, Mitchell had aspirations of becoming a comedian (that or the prime minister, anyway). He attended Abingdon School in Oxfordshire, where he realised that there were a lot of awfully smart people in the world and decided that if he was to have a chance at being the best, it was going to be on the drama or debate teams. So, he turned his energies there, and through these outlets began to develop and fine-tune his aptitude for comedy, articulation and performance.
During his first year at university, Mitchell met and struck up a friendship with Robert Webb during a pantomime audition. Webb would become one of his most important professional collaborators. During university, Mitchell also performed with the Cambridge Footlights, a university theatre club, and eventually became president of the organisation. He held the position between 1995 and 1996.
