A Norwegian pop singer, Dagny Norvoll Sandvik – better known simply as Dagny – was born in 1990. She is perhaps best known by British and American audiences for her rendition of the song “Backbeat”, which featured in an episode of the popular US medical drama, Grey's Anatomy. An acoustic version of her single was used in the 'True Colors' episode of that television show. “Backbeat”, her debut solo single, gained lots of public interest on major streaming sites, notably with Spotify, where it was ranked highly.
Dagny's early career
Dagny developed her crystal-clear vocal talent from a young age. She was raised in the Arctic Circle, in the northernmost parts of Norway. In 2011, Dagny gained her first big break when she was chosen to sing on a single with Tromsř rock outfit, Vishnu. She featured on their “Run River Run” single, which brought the young singer to the attention of many in Scandinavia for the first time. As the daughter of the vocalist Marit Sandvik, well-known in Norway, as well as the esteemed jazz musician Řystein Norvoll, Dagny took the opportunity afforded her by Vishnu and began performing under her own name, gaining an ever-growing following. Her touring has continued in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and the UK, to this day. In 2010 and 2012, Dagny recorded vocals for some releases by Kohib, including the Make Fire album.
In 2014, Dagny gained a string of support slots for Bryan Adam. She opened a number of shows on his Reckless 30th Anniversary Tour. She has also performed in a support role for Elton John and Sting, among others. Dagny continued to perform as a headline act at smaller venues at this time.
Dagny's mainstream breakthrough
As mentioned, it was Dagny's acoustic version of “Backbeat”, which had previously been released in a fuller arrangement, that brought her to the attention of many. Following its use in the TV show, she was approached by Universal Music to join their label, something she opted to do in 2016. At the time, Rob Stevenson, the Executive Vice President of Universal Republic Records, said that Dagny had made a huge impression on everyone at the label who had heard “Backbeat”. She performed a showcase gig for the great and the good of New York's music industry prior to her signing with Universal, and is said to have brought the house down with her intimate vocals and intricate arrangements.
Following her gaining a professional recording contract, Dagny set about working on her debut album release. This came out in September 2016 and was called Ultraviolet. It featured “Backbeat” and was distributed on the Republic label of Universal Music in a digital format only.
