A new generation of cinema experiences
The famous and historic King’s Road cinema known as the Curzon Chelsea closed its doors in 2018 as part of a huge regeneration project. The brand new Curzon Chelsea which replaced it features a wealth of high-specification fittings and state-of-the-art sound and visuals. The new cinema boasts an audience capacity of 600 across its three screens and the entire venue is fully wheelchair accessible. The cinema was first opened back in the black-and-white-days of 1937 and held the largest single screen of its time. The audience capacity was a whopping 2,052! Known as the Gaumont Palace, it was to be renamed the Curzon Chelsea in 2006. Central King’s Road in the west of London has undergone significant redevelopment to enhance the neighbourhood, making Curzon Chelsea the jewel in the King’s Road crown! Not just a cinema complex, the Curzon also has a brand new rooftop bar, a new pub, rental flats and office space. The sister cinemas Curzon Victoria and Curzon Mayfair remain unaffected by this new development, but you can now buy Curzon Chelsea tickets for the latest blockbuster film releases with StubHub.
From hi-techno to art deco
Cinema fans will also enjoy visiting some of London’s other venues, including foreign-language and vintage cinemas. London offers a host of interesting viewing experiences which can be combined with meals at great restaurants or drinks at any number of lively bars. The Empire, known as Cineworld Haymarket, is set in buzzing Leicester Square, where it is regularly used for Hollywood film premieres and boasts red-carpet walks. By complete contrast, South Kensington is the home to Cine Lumiere, which is a foreign-language cinema. In addition to showing subtitled French and international films, the venue has a full events calendar that features lectures, poetry readings and other educational evenings. The building itself is worth a visit alone - with its original art deco theme, it proudly sits as a beautiful landmark in the area. Other quirky London cinemas include the Everyman Theatre, Picture House Central, the Electric Cinema and the Prince Charles Cinema. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
