Originally from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Colter Wall is a singer, guitarist and songwriter who is mostly associated with blues, country music and Americana. Wall is best known for his eponymous album, which was released in May 2017. He toured Canada and the United States extensively to promote his debut LP. Throughout August of that year, he played all over Scandinavia, also taking in dates in the UK and Germany.
Colter Wall's early life and musical upbringing
Born in 1995, Wall is the middle child of Tami and Brad Wall. His father is a public figure in Saskatchewan, having served as the province's political premier. Wall grew up listening to country music, thanks to his parents' love of Johnny Cash, among others. He began experimenting with the guitar at the age of 13. Initially, he played heavy rock riffs that he learned from songs by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, for instance. However, from the age of about 16, Wall's ear changed and he began focusing much more on blues and folk music.
According to the artist himself, it was Bob Dylan who informed his musical style at this time, turning him into the performer he is today. In particular, Dylan's “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right” gave the young guitarist the inspiration to try his hand at penning his own melodies and lyrics to go alongside his improving guitar fingering.
Colter Wall's professional career in music
From 2013, when he had left school, Wall went on to study at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. However, he spent much of his time listening to artists such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Woody Guthrie and Townes Van Zandt. During this time at university, Wall made a demo of some of his songs. In 2015, he decided that he would take a break from formal education to focus on his burgeoning music career.
Wall recorded his debut EP, Imaginary Appalachia, later that year. He collaborated with Jason Plumb, who produced it. Successfully blending folk and blues with Americana, it received critical appreciation. Containing seven songs, the EP was longer than many. The song “Sleeping On The Backtop” was used for Hell or High Water, a US crime thriller, and another movie's soundtrack. It subsequently went on to be streamed extensively on Spotify.
Garnering ever-growing audiences, Wall opened a show for Lucinda Williams in Nashville, in 2016. His aforementioned self-titled album came out the following year, having been worked on during 2016 in the home of country music. It reached number 16 in the US Folk charts. It also got to number 11 in US Indie charts.
