The long road to worldwide fame

Humble beginnings for Cirque du Soleil saw the performing troupe, then known as Les Échassiers, struggling to make a living for themselves as they toured around Quebec in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Then, in 1983, they were invited to perform as part of the celebration of Jacques Cartier’s voyage to Canada. It was the 450th anniversary of the event and the performance troupe knew they had to do something amazing. So they put on a show and called it Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil. In the following few years the show would ebb and flow as it found its footing but by the 1990s and 2000s it was shooting across the globe and building its number of shows. Its first European tour in 1990 took it to cities like London and since then the capital of England has seen various versions of the show performed at venues such as The O2 Arena and the London Royal Albert Hall.
