Circles Around the Sun background
The band members, Neal Casal, Adam MacDougall, Dan Horne and Mark Levy, first started playing together after being approached by filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann. Kreutzmann, the son of Grateful Dead member Bill Kreutzmann, wanted them to produce music that would be compatible with the visual effects that he had prepared for the live concerts. The four musicians agreed and performed with the Grateful Dead on their final farewell tour. There were two performances in Santa Clara, California, and three performances in Chicago, both in the summer of 2015. Circles Around the Sun ended up continuing to stay together to explore their options and push the envelope on what they could do.
Their first album, "Interludes for the Dead," was released in 2015 under the Rhino Entertainment label. It was based on the songs they played during the Dead concerts, and all the tracks were recorded during an intense two-day stretch after the tour. In 2018, the band recorded new songs as part of their "Let It Wander" album. This second project was recorded at Castaway 7 Studios.
Circles Around the Sun hits
One of the highlights of their second record is "One For Chuck." This song got its name when Chuck D from the group Public Enemy visited their recording studio while they were still working on the song. He gave them such meaningful, positive feedback that they decided to name the song after him.
An earlier hit was "Gilbert's Groove." This 12-minute song featured swinging drums and funky guitar melodies reminiscent of "Shakedown Street," an album released by the Grateful Dead in 1978.
