Chris Rea: blues stalwart celebrates 40 years in music business
Born and raised in Middlesbrough, Rea's father owned a successful ice cream company, consisting of a factory and 21 cafes across England. Chris was all set to follow in his father's footsteps but after buying his first guitar at the age of 22, he never looked back. He joined his first band Magdalene in 1973, replacing David Coverdale (founder of Whitesnake). He raised his profile by touring relentlessly with various bands before going solo in 1978, when he released his debut album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini? produced by Gus Dudgeon – most notable for his work with Elton John. The record charted well and spawned the hit US single "Fool (If You Think It's Over)".
Rea enjoyed success in Europe throughout the 1980s and achieved his commercial breakthrough with the album The Road to Hell in 1989, which soared to number one in the UK charts. His follow-up record Auberge also charted at number one in the UK and paved the way for further success as a rock icon. Since he fell ill with pancreatic cancer in the early 2000s, the star has made an amazing recovery and has returned to his blues rock roots. He continues to sell out tours across Europe and America and plays his music with the same fervent passion as he did twenty years ago.
