Chemical Brothers: big beat scientists
Along with the likes of The Prodigy and Fatboy Slim, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons – better known as The Chemical Brothers – helped to pioneer the big beat genre of the 1990s and take electronica to the masses. From "Block Rockin' Beats" and "Hey Boy Hey Girl" to newer successes such as "Galvanize" and "Go", Rowlands and Simons have endured at the forefront of the big beat scene for two decades – and they're not done yet. Renowned for their incendiary live shows, fans are always treated to the biggest tunes from their magnificent back catalogue as well as their latest groundbreaking bangers. Chemical Brothers: award-winning chart toppers
Formed in Manchester in 1989, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons spent years honing their craft before finally achieving superstardom. Starting out as the Dust Brothers, they initially sent out white-label vinyls to local shops and performed at Manchester club Naked Under Leather. Migrating to Heavenly Sunday Social in London's Great Portland Street (famous for notable regulars such as Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, James Dean Bradfield and Tim Burgess) the duo found themselves getting noticed.
While the attention brought TV appearances and requests for remixes, the pair were forced to change their name after the original Dust Brother – Beastie Boys producers LA-based, producers, E.Z. Mike (Michael Simpson) and King Gizmo (John King) – filed an objection. Having released single "Chemical Beats", and wanting to retain the Brothers element for a link to their heritage, they called themselves the Chemical Brothers...and they haven't looked back since.
Bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture, the Chemical Brothers have had six UK number one albums and 13 top 20 singles, including two number ones. Among the plethora of awards the duo have won, Push The Button was named Best Dance/Electronic Album at the Grammy Awards of 2006 while single "Galvanize" claimed Best Dance Recording. The duo hold the record for most gigs performed in a year at London's O2 Brixton Academy, and return to the UK in 2018.
