Trivia

Cat Stevens was known as "the artist boy" because he did poorly in school aside from art and music classes. He changed his name to Cat Stevens partly because he thought it was easier to remember than his birth name, and also, allegedly, because a girlfriend said his eyes were like a cat's. Much of his music reflects spiritual beliefs, especially after nearly dying of tuberculosis in 1969.

Singer

Cat Stevens wrote numerous folk songs in the 1970s. Shortly after his conversion to Islam in 1977, he decided to quit music because he felt that some of the music industry's culture conflicted with his newfound religious beliefs. After he was banned from entering the United States because of a mixup surrounding his new name in 2004, he apologised to fans for abruptly leaving the music industry and began recording new music again.

Breakthrough

Cat Stevens' big break came in 1970, when he landed a deal with Island Records to promote his music in the United States as well as in the UK. His single "Lady D'Arbanville" was the first to be played on radio stations across the Atlantic; it had a distinctive sound due to the use of some unusual percussion instruments, which caused it to skyrocket to the top of charts in both of the countries it was released in.

Hit Albums

Steven's first album, Matthew and Sons (1967), was a hit, with the title track taking the No. 2 spot on UK charts. "The First Cut is the Deepest" from his second album New Masters (1967) won two awards in 2005; the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and the Song of the Year awards. Stevens won Songwriter of the Year again for the track in 2006. Other notable albums include Tea for the Tillerman, Teaser and the Firecat, Catch Bull at Four and Foreigner. Tea for the Tillerman has been listed as one of "The Definitive 200 Albums of All Time" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and National Association of Recording Merchandisers.
