A new girl band is in town
Founded in 2015 in Melbourne, Camp Cope is a girl band consisting of singer and guitarist Georgia McDonald, drummer Sarah Thompson, and bassist Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich. This indie rock group, which has quickly climbed the charts and was even nominated for the Australian Album of the Year, is making its fortune as a 1990s throwback, winning over lovers of post-emo alternative rock and punk music alike. At the same time, however, Camp Cope defies all labels and becomes universal thanks to songs with more widely relevant themes. These songs include "Trepidation", which is about anxiety and mental health, and "Lost: Season One" (titled in honour of the über-famous TV series), which talks about long-distance relationships and the feelings wrapped up in the difficulty of sustaining one. Thanks to the band's popularity, Camp Cope tickets are sure to be sold out soon; visit StubHub to buy yours now.
Camp Cope: putting feminism back in music
Camp Cope is not your regular girl band that sings only love songs; rather, this group, whose music has been described as uplifting yet aching at the same time, has quickly turned to political and social activism. Indeed, the members have not shied away, both on and off the stage, from calling the music industry out on its longstanding disregard of female musicians. The band did so not only in articles and interviews but also by doing what they do best: singing. Their lead single itself, "Jet Fuel Can't Melt Steel Beams" is about victim-blaming and how toxic the idea of "boys will be boys" can be, while "Face of God" is about the sexual abuse one of the members, Georgia MacDonald, suffered at the hands of another musician. A good mix of novelty and nostalgia, talent and activism, there aren't many other singers or bands that can compare to Camp Cope. Still, if you are a fan, other interesting artists to look into are Cayetana, an indie rock band from Philadelphia; Melbourne-based songwriter Alex Lahey; Hop Along, an American trio from Philadelphia; and, of course, Petal, a Pennsylvania singer the Australian band has toured with in the past.
