Trevor George Smith Jr, better known by his stage name Busta Rhymes, was born the son of Jamaican immigrants in 1972. In the 1970s, the South Bronx spawned hip hop subculture, which spread to other areas of New York including downtown Brooklyn, where Busta grew up. He learned his craft in good company, facing off against fellow students Shawn Corey Carter and Christopher George Wallace - better known as Jay Z and The Notorious B.I.G. - in rap battles.
Rising to prominence in the 1990s as one of the Leaders of the New School, Busta became one of the most prolific and respected East Coast rappers. His gravel-voiced guest appearances on tracks by artists like The Notorious B.I.G, Puff Daddy and TLC's diamond selling album CrazySexyCool earned him widespread critical acclaim, so success as a solo artist was inevitable. Many hip hop fans attest that Busta Rhymes is the fastest rapper in history, and no less than a vocal genius. The irreverent MC's West Indian tinged inflection, feverish vocal timbres and quick-fire delivery give him a completely unique style that separates him from other artists.
He released his debut solo album The Coming in 2006, buoyed by the Grammy nominated single 'Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check' which soared into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Widely regarded as one of the best hip hop tunes of all time, it's the song responsible for propelling Busta to superstardom. His 1997 sophomore album When Disaster Strikes spawned several massive hits including 'Dangerous' and 'Turn It Up, while lead single 'Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See' earned a Grammy nomination for Best Solo Rap Performance. His seventh studio album The Big Bang, released in 2006, is regarded as his magnum opus, the first number one selling record of his career and highest charting album to date in the UK.
