One of the most talked about rappers on the UK underground grime scene, Manchester-born wordsmith Bugzy Malone is at the forefront of a new wave of urban artists. Known as the 'Evil Genius', Malone (real name Aaron Davis) has risen to become a key instigator of the grime revival and updated the early-2000s sound for a whole new audience.
All three of his EPs have made the UK top 10 – with his latest release, King of the North peaking at number four – and after thrilling crowds with his epic live performances at We Are Manchester, Kendal Calling and Leeds and Reading festivals in 2017; Bugzy will be one to watch in 2018.

Bugzy Malone: underground hero to mainstream success
Grime emerged in the early 2000s in East London, propelled by artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Kano and Lethal Bizzle on the capital's pirate radio stations. While some of the big players of the scene went onto achieve mainstream success and widespread critical acclaim, the inner-city-youth movement has evolved on the underground airwaves. Taking inspiration from his grime forefathers, Manchester star Bugzy Malone is proving a trailblazer for a regeneration of the genre in 2017.
In his viral smash single "Relegation Riddim", he criticises grime artists like Chipmunk that have conformed to pop standards, saying: "When it comes down to the school of grime, I'm the headmaster of my time". Taking a more mature approach than the artists that came before him with his introspective lyrics and musings on politics and poverty, the 'Evil Genius' has just released his 2017 album King of the North, described as a 'coherent and excellently structured' record by the music press.
His spitfire delivery on his earlier cult-hit mixtapes such as Swaggaman (2010) and his EPs Walk With Me (2015) and Facing Time (2016) have already accrued him a horde of fans and invitations to perform at the UK's top festivals. Bugzy was one of the artists performing at the reopening of the MEN Arena at the One Love Manchester event. He posted on his personal Twitter account following his performance: "I've told them before and I'll tell them again Manchester is the home of the brave..."
