The Mexican-American grindcore metal band Brujeria currently plays concert dates at select venues around the country. The band’s hard-hitting music features narcocorrido-style songs that tell first-person stories about Satanism, the drug trade, racial prejudice and the politically charged U.S.-Mexican border issue. They’re known for songs such as “¡Demoniaco!,” “Matando Güeros” and most recently “Viva Presidente Trump.”
The band’s Spanish name, Brujeria, translates to “witchcraft” in English. Founded in 1989 by Juan Brujo to protest perceived mistreatment by the Los Angeles police force, the band has undergone several personnel changes over the years. While there are rumors that its musicians play in other popular bands or may operate as drug lords when not performing with Brujeria, the stories are difficult to confirm. The musicians protect their anonymity with aliases and cover the lower half of their faces with bandanas when on stage. Says bandleader Brujo about Brujeria’s dark themes, “A lot of Brujeria songs are true stories and if they haven’t happened yet, they will happen.” All of the songs are sung in Spanish.
Musicians involved in the making of 2016’s album Pocho Aztlan were vocalist-bassist Fantasma, drummers Hongo and Hongo Jr., guitarist El Cynico, vocalists Pinche Peach and Pititus, guitarist A Kurerno and backup singers Sangron and Guero III in addition to lead singer Juan Brujo. It is the first Brujeria album released on an established label. The band chose extreme music record company Nuclear Blast.
The band reunited after an almost 10-year hiatus to promote their music on tour. Brujeria’s violent musical themes, album art and performance props continue to create controversy throughout the music industry. Their debut album, Matando Güeros, loosely translated to “kill white people" featured a disembodied head. Merchants pulled the album off their shelves until the band re-packaged it with a simple black cover. The death metal band yields machetes in live performances and celebrates ritual serial killing in their music.
Brujeria album discography includes Matando Güeros, Raza Odiada, Brujerizmo and Pocho Aztlan. Compilation albums include Spanglish 101, Mextremist! and The Mexecutioner!
