Boy George Biography - Androgynous New Romanticism

Born George O'Dowd in London in 1961, it didn't take long for this aspiring artist to become entangled in the New Romanticist movement of the '80s after he left school. His androgynous appearance and flamboyant fashion tastes quickly caught the attention of music executives, and he soon formed his own group - Culture Club. Their debut single 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?', released 1982, topped charts across the world and triggered a trend that would see the group become the first band since the Beatles to achieve three Top 10 hits in the US just from their debut album. Its success was only succeeded by international chart smash 'Karma Chameleon'. Charting in the top spot in 16 countries and spending six weeks at Number One in the UK, the single became the group's signature song.

George's debut solo release Sold was released in 1987 and proved to be a European success - particularly the reggae influenced ballad 'Everything I Own', which became another international chart-topping hit. Having since branched out into DJing and producing, the soloist is still revered as one of pop's greatest talents.
