Black Sabbath Biography - Ozzy's Dark Lords Back For More
Originating in Aston, Birmingham, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward enlisted Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne after the break-up of their previous band, Mythology. Performing for a couple of years under the name Earth, they eventually settled on the name for which they would become known after watching the 1963 Mario Bava horror film Black Sabbath. Inspired by the work of horror writer Dennis Wheatley and making use of the musical triton or the 'Devil's Interval', the group's music was pushed into a darker direction.
The following years would see their self-titled debut reach number eight in the UK album charts and their second, Paranoid, number one, eventually going on to sell over four million copies. By 1977 tensions over a change in musical style led to Osbourne leaving the band, only to return the following year to record the band's eighth album Never Say Die! The next decade would see multiple changes in line-up for the band, as original members left to pursue solo projects. By 1992, all but Osbourne had reunited for the band's first commercial success in nine years, with album Dehumanizer. The full group in fact didn't reunite until 2001 when they headlined the sixth edition of Ozzfest. The band have continued to have their ups and downs ever since, with illnesses and TV shows preventing a permanent reunion, until 2012 when they played their first show together in seven years at the O2 Academy in Birmingham. Back again with a final album and final tour, this could be your last chance to see three of the original members, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler perform together for one last time.
