Bat Out of Hell the Musical has its music, book and lyrics written by Jim Steinman, the award-winning composer who collaborated with the rock star Meat Loaf on his seminal 1977 album Bat Out of Hell. Songs from that album, as well as the other two records in Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell trilogy, are the soundtrack to this rock 'n' roll-bolstered adventure. The story of the star-crossed love between Strat and Raven is told with the backdrop of energetic dance numbers, belting heavy rock performances and live, revving motorcycles. Fresh from its acclaimed previews in Manchester, Bat Out of Hell the Musical is coming to the West End, where it's set to wow audiences at the London Coliseum.
Bat Out of Hell London's history
Bat Out of Hell the Musical is based upon the smash-hit Meat Loaf album of the same name, which came out in 1977 and went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. The record was originally conceived as a rock opera, so its transformation into a contemporary musical made for the stage brings it full circle, some five decades later. Beloved songs from the album, including "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "Dead Ringer for Love" and the title track take on new life as the foundation for the musical's soundtrack. "What Part Of My Body Hurts the Most" and "Not Allowed to Love" are two new songs written just for the musical.
Under the direction of Obie- and Guggenheim Award-winner Jay Scheib, Bat Out of Hell the Musical tells the story of Strat, leader of a street gang called The Lost, and his love Raven, who is the beautiful daughter of the ruthless ruler Falco. A post-apocalyptic dystopia known as Obsidian is the setting for this Romeo and Juliet-meets-rock 'n' roll production. Audiences will witness all the expected accompaniments of a hard rock show -- dry ice, sweaty swagger, operatic belting and high-energy expressions of lust and longing.
