Events at Aviva Stadium
Thanks to its central location in the heart of Ireland's capital and its joint ownership by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and Football Association of Ireland (FAI), Aviva Stadium enjoys a steady calendar of major sports events throughout the year. It is the predominant location for rugby union matches (being the home of the Ireland team) and having hosted the Heineken Cup Final on various occasions. Association football competitions are often held at the stadium too, hosting important matches such as the FAI Cup Final, Nations Cup and the Europa League Final in 2011. Even more excitingly, the venue will be host to several group and round of 16 matches during Euro 2020.
The Aviva Stadium is also an important stop off point for many big name music acts, having seen performances from the likes of Madonna, AC/DC and Michael Buble. While this year sees Phil Collins and Robbie Williams take to the stage.
Aviva Stadium history
Originally known as Lansdowne Road Stadium, the stadium can boast being a prominent place of sports since 1872, hosting athletics, cricket, football alongside other popular 19th century sports such as croquet and archery. The stadium hosted its first rugby match in 1876. Suffice to say, over the years the stadium has received a plethora of updates and extensions, along with winning a number of awards – particularly in regards to the stadium's architecture. Some of the most recent awards include LAMA's Eco-Friendly Building Award in 2012, the Royal Institute of British Architects Regional Award, the ECCS 2011 European Steel Design Award and the 2011 Event Industry Awards' Best Event Caterer.
