A Midsummer Night’s Dream
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a ballet choreographed by George Balanchine, set to music by Felix Mendelssohn. It is based on the play of the same name written by William Shakespeare.
The ballet’s first act follows Shakespeare’s play fairly closely, with its tale of “lovers and fairies.” The second act dispenses with Shakespeare’s story entirely and presents “a strictly classical dance wedding celebration.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was Balanchine’s first wholly original, full-length ballet. It premiered at the New York City Ballet in January 1962. In addition to the music Mendelssohn specifically composed for the performance of Shakespeare’s play, Balanchine used other pieces of the composer’s in the ballet.
About George Balanchine
George Balanchine was a prominent choreographer, “father” of American Ballet, co-founder, in 1948, of the New York City Ballet and its artistic director for more than three decades. He was born in Russia, where he trained in music and ballet. He fled the Soviet Union in 1924, going first to Paris, then, in 1933, to the United States. He opened his first ballet school shortly after.
He choreographed several ballets, including a version of The Nutcracker that the NYCB has staged every Christmastime since 1954.
About Felix Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer who, at just 17, composed the overture for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, though not for any performance of the play at the time; it was originally written as a concert overture. It premiered in February 1827 in what was then Prussia, today’s Poland.
In 1842, he was commissioned by the Prussian king to create incidental music for the play, after successfully doing so with a different play. The original piece from 16 years earlier was added as the new music’s overture. He composed an additional 13 pieces, some instrumental, some with voices; the immediately recognized piece today is his famous “Wedding March.” The music premiered with a performance of the play at Potsdam in 1843.
