Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack on backing vocals, keyboard and drums, the twosome took their
name from a 460 year old honorary tree of their home state. Crafting a dreamy sound filled with interesting textures and nuances,
the band has developed from its nomadic beginnings to become true indie darlings. Formed under the moniker Monarch in 2006,
the band produced their first album independently on various locations before catching the attention of hip label Merge. The
re-issuing of debut If Children earned the pair favourable reviews from influential music site Pitchfork and
demand for Wye Oak tickets started to grow.
Often compared to the likes of alternative rockers Yo La Tengo, the group started to build a loyal fan base and by the
time sophomore The Knot was released in 2009 they had solidified their reputation on the live circuit for their grandiose
compositions. Deciding to self-produce their third effort Civilian, Wasner and Stack took their sound to new heights,
revelling in their artistic freedom.
