The Waterboys Biography
- From Solo Acts to International Favourites
During the early '80s Mike Scott experimented with a series of solo recordings
but felt that something was missing, sparking the origins of The Waterboys, taking inspiration from Lou Reed hit 'The Kids'.
Using material that Scott had written for his solo debut, the group released debut single 'A Girl Called Johnny', which was
shortly followed by their eponymous debut album in July 1983. Influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan and David Bowie, the group
were given their own sound, 'The Big Music', and would support The Pretenders and U2 on tour.
In the late '80s, Scott
was invited to stay in Dublin where he was inspired by the sounds of traditional Celtic folk. This influence was prominently
felt on their next few records as the group left behind their previous rock orientated records for a folk influenced sound.
Still, it didn't take long for the band to move back to their roots and after the release of Top 3 hit 'The Whole of the Moon',
the group's split opinions on the direction of their music saw a succession of line-up changes before settling again in 2000.
