The Strokes – The Sound of New York
In 2001, rock ‘n’ roll was reborn for the 21st century in the form of The Strokes. Emerging on the New York
urban scene with black leather jackets, bedhead hair and all, the Upper East Siders brought a slick, disinterested touch to
rock not seen since Jim Morrison fronted The Doors.
Singles ‘Is This It’ and ‘Last Nite’ offered a new soundtrack for a generation craving the unpolished
sound of distorted guitars. Early concerts gave the music the extra push it needed, earning The Strokes a loyal following
both in America and in the UK.

The Strokes Biography – Leather Jackets and Indie Rock
Formed by lead singer Julian Casablancas in 1999, The Strokes were barely in their '20s when debut album Is This It
was released in 2001, catapulting them into stardom. Hyped by NME and the British music press, the lives of Strokes
members Casablancas, bassist Nikolai Fraiture, drummer Fabrizio Moretti and guitarists Albert Hammond, Jr. and Nick Valensi
were changed forever.
Taking Britain by storm, The Strokes were a breath of fresh air after 90s bands Blur
and Oasis became part of the Britpop establishment. Performing at major UK festivals Reading and Leeds Festival,
the band’s popularity skyrocketed and organisers had to switch stages of The Strokes concert to avoid fans being trampled.
The Strokes continued to rise in popularity in 2002 with the release of their follow up album Room on Fire in
late 2003. The album was followed by a tour with then newcomers, Kings of Leon. Continuing to develop their sound, The Strokes
are still going strong after more than a decade.
