Russell Watson Biography - From Working Men's Clubs to Multi-Platinum Success
Born in Salford, Lancashire, Russell Watson came from humble beginnings. His singing career didn't start until his Elvis Presley covers caught the attention of a music secretary in a working men's club who
asked if he had tried classical singing. He was keen to try and sang Nessun Dorma' after learning the song phonetically. Russell
Watson went on to sign a management deal with Ian Boasman in 1998 and subsequently sang Barcelona' at the Old Trafford, during
which performer he tore off his dinner jacket to reveal a Manchester United shirt underneath, garnering loud applause.
This appearance sealed Russell Watson's success. He released his debut album, The Voice, in May 2001, which made
Russell the first British artist to top both the UK and US classical charts. The Voice' continued producing top 10 albums
until it was discovered that he was suffering from a pituitary adenoma in 2006. After battling through surgery and other health-related
tribulations, Russell Watson has returned with a deeper and richer voice along with two double platinum certifications, one
platinum and two gold albums.
