Formed in 1946 with the aim of bringing together the country's top classical musicians in one ensemble, the RPO came to
life thanks to the work of the renowned impresario and conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. After performing their first concert
in Croydon, the ensemble began to grow in popularity and took on members of an even higher calibre, including 'Conductor for
Life' Rudolf Kempe. The orchestra gradually came to develop its own character, with the woodwind section in particular taking
on a life of their own, earning them the nickname of The Royal Family.
The RPO overcame numerous threats to their existence to record Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress as well as Gilbert and
Sullivan's operas between 1964 and 1979. 1986 saw them launch RPO Records, the world's first record label to be owned by a
symphony orchestra. The ensemble's sister orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, enjoys similar success with
