        Rancid Biography - Staying True to their DIY Roots

        Alongside The Offspring and Green Day, Rancid emerged on the American scene in the early '90s, filling the void left by Nirvana. Formed from the remnants of '80s band Operation Ivy, vocalist/guitarist Tim Armstong and bass player Matt Freeman started the group in 1991, with drummer Brett Reed and guitarist Lars Fredriksen completing the line-up. Building a loyal following in the San Francisco Bay Area, the band was approached by Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph founder Brett Gurewitz. The contract afforded a great deal of creative freedom for the four-piece, who released their self-titled debut album in 1993.

        With break-through album ...And Out Came the Wolves in 1995, Rancid reached new heights of stardom, catching the attention of the world's major record labels. Determined to preserve their creative freedom, the quartet stayed with Epitaph, carving a distinct niche with their ska-punk sound.
