This sensational singer grew up in the Indian city of
Jetpur, near Rajkot. The youngest of three brothers, he came from a passionately musical family and looked up to his older
brothers who enjoyed minor success as playback singers of Bollywood films. He was inducted into musical performance at a young
age and after studying science at Wilson College in Mumbai, decided to pursue his dream of becoming a ghazal singer. A Ghazal
is a type of Persian poetry, written by mystics in the 13th Century and this vibrant vocalist has managed to make
the style relevant for modern audiences.
He spend some time in North America, fine-tuning his performance before releasing
his first Ghazal album Aahat in 1980. In 1986, he performed in the acclaimed Indian film Naam which cemented
him as a household name. As of 2011, this sensational musician released more than 50 studio albums plus countless compilation
albums. He has lent his voice to many popular Indian films including Ghayal and Mohra. With a cabinet crammed
full of awards, this sensational vocalist has been honoured with the fourth highest civilian award of 'Padma Shri' for his
