In Oliver!,the Oliver Twist story is given a musical touch, bringing the tragic story of the orphan child alive
on stage. The adaptation - with script, lyrics and music by Lionel Bart - premiered in the West End in the '60s at the Noel Coward Theatre, then known as the New Theatre.
Since then, the award-winning musical has been staged several times both in the UK and the US, with prominent actors Griff
Rhys Jones and Rowan Atkinson playing the part of Fagin.
Written by Charles Dickens in the mid-18th century, Oliver Twist characters are coarse, colourful and
corrupt as well as brilliantly sincere and unspoiled. In the story, Oliver finds himself in the midst of pick-pocketing youngsters
led by the crook Fagin after fleeing his awful caretakers. Unaware of the dubious morals of his new company, Oliver befriends
Nancy, the girlfriend of Bill Sykes, a violent drunk who runs the pick-pocketing operation with Fagin.
