Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the rapper born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones hails from a musical dynasty, born in 1973 to
jazz musician father Olu Dara. Initially setting his sights on being an instrumentalist, at the tender age of three he was
already experimenting with his father's trumpet outside their family home. Dropping out of high school by 14, the young musician
changed direction, immersing himself in the history of hip-hop music and dabbling in the art of songwriting. It was around
this time he created the performance nickname Kid Wave, before later changing his alias to Nasty Nas.
Layering gritty beats over his vivid brand of hip-hop storytelling, the artist began to craft a gutsy sound that won over
underground audiences. Illmatic - released under the mononym he's best known by today - kicked off his mainstream career
with a bang, with critics hailing it an instant classic and a breakthrough for rap music. The rapper has since built upon
his success with further releases, collaborating with industry heavweights such as Dr. Dre along the way, and even turning
to acting with a role in Hype Williams' urban drama Belly. 2012's Life is Good marked yet another landmark in
his storied career - not only was it his first solo release in four years, but it scored the rapper his fifth Number One on
the Billboard album charts and marked his last release with Def Jam Records.
Despite some controversial public feuds and private dramas, the artist has navigated the highs and lows of his career and
personal life to return a more assured performer than ever. You can see this rap legend live by starting your search for Nas
