Live Music at Sheffield Arena - Hosting Landmark Performances Over the Years

Since it was officially opened by the Queen in 1991, the arena has seen many landmarks in entertainment history. In sports, it was the venue where boxer Joe Calzaghe's defeated Chris Eubank in 1997, while huge artists such as AC/DC and Green Day have also graced its stage. As a multi-purpose auditorium, Sheffield Arena has the capacity to hold intimate theatre performances of 3,500 to arena tours of up to 13,000 patrons.

Known officially as the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield since 2010, the £34 million venue has undergone various transformations throughout the years. International Supercross sees the arena transformed into a six-lane dirt track with 2000 tons of soil dumped onto the ice floor. Whilst the 1999 production of Les Miserables required that the arena transform into an intimate theatre setting within the space of five days, meaning that the electronic score board was removed for the first time since its opening and over 4,000 square metres of drapes and 3,000 square metres of carpet were used to create an intimate auditorium. Home to the Sheffield Steelers, the arena also transforms into an ice hockey rink for 30 games a season.
