Morrissey Biography - The Mancunian Made Good
Born in 1959 in Manchester, England, Morrissey's love of music first manifested in his teens, becoming a regular contributor
to the weekly music paper Melody Maker. In 1982 he met guitarist Johnny Marr and the two began penning songs together leading
to the release of The Smiths' 1983 'Hand in Glove', a seminal track that attracted the attention on the UK underground music
scene.
As The Smiths' fame grew, Morrissey became notable for his manipulation of the media. Frequently expressing strong and
unsubstantiated opinions, Morrissey's outrageous stage performances soon led to speculation about his sexuality. After The
Smiths separated in 1987 Morrissey went on to pursue a solo career, the first Morrissey songs continuing to achieve success
both critically and commercially.
Suffering a dip in popularity in the early 90s, Morrissey's star has been on the rise in recent years. Earning the Mancunian
a place in the limelight of the British music scene, critics hailed the 2009 offering Years of Refusal the best Morrissey
album to date.
