Born in 1959 in Manchester, England, Morrissey's love of music first manifested in his teens, becoming a regular contributor to the weekly music paper Melody Maker. In 1982 he met guitarist Johnny Marr and the two began penning songs together leading to the release of The Smiths' 1983 'Hand in Glove', a seminal track that attracted the attention on the UK underground music scene.
As The Smiths' fame grew, Morrissey became notable for his manipulation of the media. Frequently expressing strong and unsubstantiated opinions, Morrissey's outrageous stage performances soon led to speculation about his sexuality.
