Madness Biography - Mad For Success
Beginning as a six-piece known as The Invaders, the band went through a variety of names and line-ups before ultimately
renaming themselves Madness in 1978 as an homage to noted ska/reggae artist Prince Buster. The group's first single, 'The
Prince', went on to chart within the UK top 20, success that led to a recording contract with Stiff Records.
Madness quickly recorded their debut album One Step Beyond, which peaked at number two and remained on the UK charts
for over a year. For the next three years, Madness songs consistently charted within the top 10, cementing the band as one
of Britain's most popular acts. Madness achieved their first number one single in 1982 with the infectious 'House of Fun'
whilst beginning the transition into a full-fledged pop band in an attempt to crack America. Their efforts paid off when the
Madness song 'Our House' broke into the US top 10.
The band's popularity began to dwindle in the mid-'80s, and the original members disbanded in the summer of 1986. However,
this musical hiatus was temporary and the band continues to perform and create music, albeit with a variety of line-ups.
