Born Kathleen Brien, Katy B’s roots are firmly in London. Like Adele and Jessie J, she is a graduate of the BRIT School, but has a connection with the grassroots urban music scene. Katy B was given the opportunity to sign with a major record company in 2009, but chose to bide her time and instead released the single ‘Katy on a Mission’ in collaboration with a local pirate radio station.
‘Katy on a Mission’ helped Katy B earn prestigious MOBO nominations for ‘Best UK Act’ and ‘Best Album’. It was Katy B’s breakthrough track ‘Lights On’, which also featured the talents of popular hip-hop artist Ms. Dynamite, that showcased her skills to an international audience.
