As one of Shakespeare's history plays, Henry V has been played at theatres across the world since its conception
in 1599. Telling the story of a brave king and alluding to political events of the time, Shakespeare's Henry V is a
piece that sheds an entertaining and oftentimes factual light on the past. Henry V is concerned with proving the legitimacy
of a king to rule and how he views his subjects. The play has proved to be such a success that two film adaptations, directed
by Laurence Olivier and Kenneth Branagh, have been released to much critical acclaim.

More About Henry V - A Brave King Justifying His Right to Reign
Based on the events of King Henry V's reign during the period around 1414-1415, Shakespeare's Henry V deals with
a popular subject of the time. Scholars have found evidence of at least three other plays about Henry V that were in
circulation around the same period. The play follows on from the events of Henry IV, Part II, where Henry V was simply
a rebellious and unruly boy, to see him blossom in his role of King in the later play.
The action alters between England and France, where Henry V is looking to secure his position as King of England and prove
his legitimacy by pursuing the French throne after their taunts. After embarking for France and diverting an attempt on his
life, Henry utters what is probably one of the best known and moving Shakespeare speeches, 'Once more unto the breach, dear
friends...', in an attempt to rally his troops. Shakespeare's Henry V also contains the famous scene of the King disguising
himself to spend time with his troupes. After wooing the French princess, Catherine of Valois, Henry becomes the adopted heir
to the French throne.
