In 1947, eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. The groups performed
regardless of the fact that they were not included in the original programme, with more and more performers following their
lead. This continued throughout the years until, in 1959, the Festival Fringe Society was established. Edinburgh Festival
Fringe provides members of the performing arts a platform for displaying their diverse talents. The festival refuses to pick
and choose performances, rather providing a free space in which creativity can blossom.
Comedy greats including Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Steve
Coogan honed their talents at Edinburgh Fringe, and it also saw the first full performance of Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz
and Guildernstern are Dead in 1966. Launching the careers of a host of well-known international actors, comedians and
the like, Edinburgh Fringe has been nothing if not inviting and nurturing of fresh talent.
