Deep Purple - Hard Rock Pioneers
In the rock 'n' roll canon this British quintet sits among the foremost pioneers
of heavy metal and hard rock. With over 100 million album sales under their collective belt, this furious fivesome ranks alongside
Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath for their continued influence on the genre, having inspired generations of musicians with their
brand of spaced-out prog rock.

Deep Purple Biography
- Turning Tragedy into Success
Envisioning a "supergroup" in which members could join and leave when they wanted, drummer
Chris Curtis' ambitious project rapidly took flight in the late '60s. Following a flurry of line-up changes, the newly-minted
group released debut album Shades of Deep Purple in July 1968. One of the tracks - a cover of 'Hush' - enjoyed phenomenal
success after reaching Number Four on the Billboard Hot 100. The up-and-coming musicians soon found themselves supporting
Cream on tour, but experienced a setback as their label went into administration.
Settling on a new line-up and a decidedly
heavier sound, the group's big break came in the form of the Concerto for Group and Orchestra. The early '70s brought
a new album but a terrible turn of events when a fire broke out in their would-be studio. Refusing to be defeated by this
unfortunate accident, the group used it to inspire their breakthrough hit 'Smoke on the Water', featuring what would become
an iconic guitar riff. The album it originated from, Machine Head, became their most successful record, reaching Number
One in the UK and entering the Top 10 in the US.
Reforming in 1999 following a 10 year split, the band continues to
reach new heights with boundary-pushing compositions and their arresting on stage presence. Browse listings for Deep Purple
