Otherwise known through the punctuation !!!, the band's monosyllabic name came from the subtitles of South African comedy movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds made by the Bushmen were represented as a "!". Formed in Sacramento, California in 1996 from members of other local bands such as The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and the uniquely-titled Popesmashers, at the turn of the millennium this group became part of the hugely successful dance-punk movement in New York alongside LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. They released their full-length, self-titled debut in 2000, which mixed house music and post-punk, and followed it up with critically-acclaimed single 'Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard' in 2003.
A second full-length album, Louden Up Now, arrived in 2004 via the respected Warp Records and a controversial covers EP followed in 2005. Despite the tragic death of their original drummer Mikel Gius later that year, the band collectively decided to carry on recording and released their third album, Myth Takes in 2007. Their most recent album, Thr!!!er hit shelves in April 2013.
