The first awards were carried out in 1977 under the moniker of the 'British Record Industry Britannia Centenary Awards'
and were held to celebrate the centenary of Thomas Edison's invention of the sound recording, whilst also marking the Queen's
Silver Jubilee. However, it wasn't until 1982 that the show was established as a regular occurance and became an annual landmark
for artists across the UK.
Now held under the title of the British Record Industry Trust (BRIT), the awards can boast of fantastic performances peppered
with fantastic musical achievments. Robbie Williams has perhaps been one of the most successful artists to attend the show,
having won a total of 12 solo awards and 5 alongside Take That. Blur also made history by winning four awards in one night
during 1995 - an unheard of success. Embodying the award's other tradition of making music history, the 1996 show saw Oasis
sing their own unique rendition of their rival's hit 'Parklife', after collecting their Best British Band award. Meanwhile,
few viewers will ever forget seeing Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker invade the stage during a performance by Michael Jackson during
the same year.
