Born in Harlem, a district of New York synonymous with the history of hip-hop, Rakim Mayers was perhaps always predestined for stardom given that his name tips its hat to legendary duo Eric B. and Rakim. After enduring a difficult childhood, by 2007 he had put together his crew of fellow rappers, producers and visual arts experts, ASAP Mob, an acronym pertaining to an ambiguous meaning.
