From Shirley Bassey to Starlight Express

Situated in London's Westminster District on Wilton Road, the Apollo Victoria Theatre opened as the New Victoria Cinema in 1930, becoming a popular pre-war and post-war favourite for film and variety theatre-goers alike. The venue also hosted big band performances, ballet productions and screenings of sporting events during its heyday, and became renowned for its double bills. The 2,328 capacity venue closed in 1976 before reopening under its more familiar moniker five years later with a Shirley Bassey concert. It soon reinvented itself as one of the West End's most popular musical theatre joints thanks to productions such as "Camelot," "The Sound of Music" and "Fiddler on the Roof." In 1984 Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Starlight Express" premiered at the venue in what would be the first of 7,406 shows, one of the ten longest stints in musical theatre history. Following the show's closure in 2002, another Lloyd Webber production, the Bollywood crossover "Bombay Dreams," moved in for a two-year run. The London home of Wicked

The Apollo Victoria Theatre brought the classic disco songs of the Bee Gees to the West End stage in 2004 with the adaptation of hit movie "Saturday Night Fever". The venue then welcomed its first jukebox musical in the shape of the 2004 Billy Joel-themed "Movin' Out" before giving Broadway hit "Wicked" its West End premiere in 2006, with Idina Menzel, Nigel Planer, Miriam Margolyes, Adam Garcia and Helen Dallimore all appearing in the original cast. Alexia Khadime, Kerry Ellis, Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman are just a few of the major talents who have portrayed leading lady Elphaba in the hugely successful reimagining of Gregory Maguire's novel, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." The show celebrated its tenth anniversary with a star-studded reunion performance in 2016 and remains one of the most popular draws on the West End circuit.
